Paul calls believers to watchful readiness for the Lord’s unexpected day, then shapes a church life of respect, care, worship, discernment, and God-given holiness.

1 Thessalonians 5:1

With the phrase “But of” (peri de), the same marker that introduced new topics at 4:9 and 4:13, Paul turns to a question that naturally follows his teaching about the dead in Christ. If the Lord will descend, raise the sleeping saints, and gather the living to himself, the next question is obvious: when? “The times and the seasons” pairs two words for time. One measures duration and sequence; the other points to decisive moments. Together they cover everything a curious believer might wish to know about the calendar of the end.

Paul answers by declining to answer. “Ye have no need that I write unto you” mentions the subject in the very act of setting it aside. The reason is that the Thessalonians had already been taught during his brief stay (2 Thessalonians 2:5). His restraint also echoes the risen Lord’s reply to the disciples, who asked whether the kingdom would now be restored: the times and seasons rest in the Father’s own authority (Acts 1:7).

This restraint is not contempt for prophecy. Scripture marks out the great movements of history and the signs that announce the nearness of the end, and believers are called to study them (Daniel 2:21; Matthew 24:32-33). What God has withheld is the day and the hour. Repeated attempts to fix that date have wounded faith and discredited the hope of the advent. Paul directs the church instead toward the kind of life that is always ready, which is the subject of the verses that follow.

Word / Phrase Notes

τῶν χρόνων καὶ τῶν καιρῶν (tōn chronōn kai tōn kairōn) — the times and the seasons

The two nouns overlap but are not identical. Chronos usually refers to time as a span or sequence, while kairos often refers to an appointed or opportune moment. Combined, they form a stock phrase for the whole question of when God will act, the same pairing Jesus used when he reserved such knowledge to the Father.
