1 Thessalonians 4:1

“Furthermore then” marks the hinge of the letter. Three chapters have recalled how the gospel reached Thessalonica, how Paul lived among the converts, why he left so suddenly, and what relief Timothy’s report brought. What remains is instruction for living, and Paul introduces it as the outworking of the prayer he has just offered: that the Lord would make them abound in love and establish their hearts “unblameable in holiness” before God at the coming of Christ (3:12–13). The chapter that follows shows what such an answered prayer looks like in bodies, homes, and workshops.

The manner of the appeal matters. “We beseech you” is the language of request among family; “exhort” adds earnest urgency. Both are spoken “by the Lord Jesus,” literally in Him. Paul addresses them as brethren and does not bark orders, yet the appeal carries the authority of the Lord in whose name it is made. Gentleness and authority stand side by side in the apostle’s pastoral speech.

“As ye have received of us” reminds the church that moral teaching belonged to the original preaching. They had learned from the first that faith in Christ reshapes conduct. The verb “walk” pictures life as a journey taken step by step, and its goal is “to please God.” Pleasing God was the standard Paul applied to his own ministry (2:4), and he now sets it before them as the measure of everything else. The approval of the Father who called them outweighs the opinion of the city and the impulses of the self.

The fuller Greek text adds that they were already walking this way, so Paul asks them to “abound more and more.” Sanctification is growth. People who have begun well are urged to keep advancing, and the God who began the work is the One who supplies the increase.

Word / Phrase Notes

πῶς δεῖ ὑμᾶς περιπατεῖν καὶ ἀρέσκειν θεῷ (pōs dei hymas peripatein kai areskein theō) — how ye ought to walk and to please God

“Walk” is Paul’s customary image for the whole pattern of daily conduct, drawn from the Old Testament habit of describing obedience as walking in God’s ways. The second verb names the purpose of that walk: to please God. The two infinitives belong together, so that the believer’s ordinary steps become an offering to the Father.

ἵνα περισσεύητε μᾶλλον (hina perisseuēte mallon) — that ye would abound more and more

The verb means to overflow or excel, and the added adverb intensifies it. Paul uses the same verb in his prayer for their love (3:12) and again in 4:10, signaling that Christian growth has no ceiling short of Christ’s coming.
