Turning, Serving, and Waiting

1 Thessalonians 1:1

The letter opens in the plain manner of ancient correspondence: writers, recipients, greeting. Paul claims no apostolic title here. The bond with this church was warm and the visit recent, so he stands beside his co-workers as one of three. Silvanus, the Silas of Acts, had shared the beating and the prison at Philippi; Timothy had just returned from Thessalonica with the report that prompted the letter. Paul is the principal author, as the occasional “I” shows, yet the “we” reflects a shared ministry.

The recipients are “the church of the Thessalonians.” In the Greek city an assembly was a gathering of citizens summoned for public business, but the Greek Old Testament used the same word for Israel gathered before the Lord. These new believers, mostly former idol worshipers, are addressed in language that once belonged to the covenant people. What distinguishes their assembly from every civic or religious gathering in the city is its location: it is “in God the Father and in the Lord Jesus Christ.” The church exists because God brought it into being, and it lives within his fellowship and under his care.

The pairing is striking. A Jew trained to revere the one God sets the Father and Jesus side by side as the single sphere of the church’s life and calls Jesus “Lord,” the title the Greek Scriptures give to the God of Israel. He offers no argument; his readers already confess it.

The greeting “grace … and peace” turns a conventional salutation into a blessing. Grace is God’s unmerited favor in Christ; peace is the wholeness and restored relationship that flows from it. The longer wording in the KJV, “from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ,” is absent from several early manuscripts and may have been added to match later letters, though the meaning is the same: every blessing comes from the Father and the Son.

Word / Phrase Notes

τῇ ἐκκλησίᾳ Θεσσαλονικέων (tē ekklēsia Thessalonikeōn) — unto the church of the Thessalonians

The noun described an assembly called together, whether citizens meeting in the city or Israel gathered before God in the Greek Old Testament. Paul uses it for a local body of believers and immediately qualifies it as existing “in God the Father and in the Lord Jesus Christ,” marking it off from every other assembly in the city.

1 Thessalonians 2:14

χάρις ὑμῖν καὶ εἰρήνη (charis hymin kai eirēnē) — grace be unto you, and peace

Greek letters usually opened with a simple “greetings,” and Hebrew letters with “peace.” Paul’s formula joins God’s unearned favor with the peace that results from it, so that the greeting becomes a compact statement of the gospel and a prayer for its continued effect.
