2 Thessalonians 1:1

The second letter opens with the same three names as the first: Paul, Silvanus, and Timotheus. Silvanus is the Latin form of Silas, the companion who had been beaten and imprisoned with Paul in Philippi just before the mission reached Thessalonica (Acts 16:19–25; 17:1–4). Timothy had recently visited the church and brought back the report that occasioned the first letter (1 Thessalonians 3:6). The three had founded this congregation together, and the believers knew all of them. Paul again uses no title of office. He does not need to defend his apostleship to these people; he writes as one of their spiritual parents, standing beside the co-workers who had shared their early dangers.

The address describes the believers as “the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.” The word “church” names an assembly, and Paul places this assembly in a double location. Its members lived in a busy provincial capital, exposed to the suspicion of neighbors and magistrates. Yet the deeper truth about them was that they existed within the life and care of God. The addition of “our” to “Father,” absent from the first letter’s greeting, brings the relationship closer: the God who adopted the missionaries is the same God who adopted these Gentile converts.

A single preposition governs both “God our Father” and “the Lord Jesus Christ.” Paul thus sets Jesus alongside the Father as the shared sphere of the church’s existence. A persecuted community could take courage from that placement. Whatever the city did to them, they were held in fellowship with the Father and the risen Lord.

Word / Phrase Notes

ἐκκλησίᾳ (ekklēsia) — church

In civic Greek the word described a gathered assembly of citizens. In the Greek Old Testament it often names the congregation of Israel assembled before the Lord. Paul applies it to a mostly Gentile group of converts, presenting them as God’s gathered people rather than a private club or a building.

ἐν θεῷ πατρὶ ἡμῶν (en theō patri hēmōn) — in God our Father

The phrase describes the church’s sphere of existence and belonging. The possessive “our” stresses that the writers and the readers share one Father, a family relationship that their persecutors could not dissolve.
