Paul recalls the integrity and tenderness of the mission at Thessalonica, gives thanks for the word received amid persecution, and longs to see the church again.

Paul now turns from what others were reporting (1:9) to what the Thessalonians themselves knew. “For yourselves, brethren, know” sets the tone for the whole chapter: he will make no claim they cannot test against their own memory. The appeal suits a situation in which the missionaries had left suddenly and rumors were filling the silence. Rather than answering slander with counter-slander, Paul calls the church as witness to what it had seen.

“Entrance” refers to the visit itself, the arrival and the weeks of work that followed. Paul says it “was not in vain.” The underlying word means empty, and it can describe something hollow in content or barren in result. Both senses suit the defense that follows. The visit was no performance by men with nothing behind their words, and it was hardly fruitless, since the readers themselves were the fruit. A church that had turned from idols to serve the living God (1:9) was the evidence.

The address “brethren” belongs to the argument as well. Paul writes as one member of a family to others, and that family language will deepen through the chapter until he speaks of being orphaned by separation (v. 17). In his view a ministry is tested by what it produces in people and by the character of those who carry it, and both are open to inspection by those who received it.

Word / Phrase Notes

εἴσοδος (eisodos) — entrance

Literally “a way in,” the noun denotes the missionaries’ arrival and reception in Thessalonica, including the whole founding visit. Paul uses the same word in 1:9, where others report what kind of welcome the preachers found. The term turns attention to the visit as an event the readers had witnessed for themselves.

1 Thessalonians 1:9

κενή (kenē) — in vain

The adjective means empty. It can describe words without substance or labor without result. Paul elsewhere fears that his work might prove empty if converts fall away, and he rejoices that God’s grace toward him was not empty. Here the denial covers both the integrity and the fruitfulness of the visit.
